Shaw contributes
to bright futures
In an ever-increasing digital world, Shaw
helps open doors to innovate educational
programs, using the power of our network
to connect, learn and grow.
Keys to success
Shaw is actively involved with projects that cover all
levels of education, ranging from pre-school to college
and university.
Since 1999, Shaw has supported Teaching and Learning
with Technology (TLT), a professional development
tool for Alberta educators from kindergarten to
post-secondary. Shaw provides financial support and
hosts TLT's website.
JR Shaw, founder of Shaw Communications, served as chair of NAIT's Board of Governors
from 1990 to 1997. His legacy to the Edmonton school serves as a reminder to corporate social
responsibility, ethics and entrepreneurship.
Shaw also sponsors NAIT's 350-seat lecture hail and classroom building, Shaw Theatre.
From the depths of the ocean floor
Shaw is the headline sponsor of an $8-million aquarium
and marine education centre in Sidney, B.C. The Shaw
Ocean Discovery Centre focuses on the amazing ecosystem
of the Salish Sea, showing exhibits of the sea and its
fascinating creatures.
The centre offers a variety of educational programs, for learners
of all ages. It signed a memorandum of understanding with
University of Victoria to work together in advancing knowledge
of the ocean.
The two institutions are collaborating in various ways to showcase
ocean science and local marine life.
To the final frontier
Space ... will we live there someday? What's it like to be an astronaut? What can you see?
These are questions students in Vulcan, Alta., got to ask an astronaut in space, thanks to Shaw's assistance.
Shaw helped connect students at Palliser Regional Schools
with the International Space Station in a special live event in
September 2009. Co-sponsored by the Canadian Space
Agency and Alberta Education, the program showcased the
innovative use of technology in classrooms to create unique learning opportunities, while encouraging students to learn more about science and technology in preparation for the event.
Students in Vulcan spoke with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk while he was aboard the International Space Station and asked him questions about what it’s like to be in space.
Shaw supported the initiative through in-kind assistance, providing the satellite downlink to connect students to the International Space Station, airing public service announcements and airing the live event through Shaw TV.
Nose for news
Shaw also is a founding member of the Media Awareness Network
(MNet), one of Canada's premier media education organizations.
MNet pioneers the development of media and digital literacy programs
and promotes understanding of how the media works, how the media
may affect their lifestyle choices and the extent to which young people,
as consumers and citizens, are being well informed.
