Remote POP Access

Download Your Email From Your Computer Remotely

Remote POP Access offers you the ability to download your email directly to your computer when it is on an Internet connection other than your Shaw Internet connection. This is useful if you take your computer to the office, on holidays or with you when travelling. This also allows portable devices, such as a Blackberry, to receive your @shaw.ca emails.

Remote POP Access allows you to receive and download your email directly to your email inbox just like at home, but does not allow you to send and upload email directly from your computer from a non-Shaw computer connection, unless you know the outgoing mail server name that is used by the Internet connection you are using to connect your computer to the Internet away from home.

To enable Remote POP Access you must change which incoming server your email program checks. Please modify your Incoming Mail server setting to pop.shaw.ca following the steps below:

Step by step for OE:

  1. Click on Tools and select Accounts
  2. Click the Mail tab, highlight your email account and click Properties

OUTGOING SERVER NAME NOTE:

To send email you must use the outgoing mail server settings of the Internet connection you are connected to, you cannot use Shaw’s outgoing server when not on a Shaw Internet connection.

Hotels and cafés usually provide their outgoing mail server information to guests and visitors upon request.

At your workplace you need to ask your IT department what the appropriate outgoing mail server name would be.

Wireless devices such as a PDA (ie. Blackberry) have this information available in your user manual or on their support site.

These outgoing mail server names would replace the Shaw settings shown in the “Outgoing Mail” field of the examples above.

REMEMBER YOUR SERVER NAMES:

Remember to write down your old Incoming and Outgoing Server Name settings as you will need to change them back when you reconnect your computer to your Residential Shaw Internet connection when you return home.
