Meet our Outstanding Canadians: Haylen Astalos

Seven-year-old Haylen has been a donor of Ronald McDonald House Charities Central Alberta since 2014. To date, Haylen has raised $14,000 for the House in Central Alberta. Haylen began raising funds for the House when he was only 5 years old. Haylen and his family decided to hold a 5-for-5 for his birthday, where in lieu of gifts they would ask friends and family to bring two $5 bills - one for him and one for his charity of choice. Given three charities to pick from, Haylen decided on Ronald McDonald House because he "wanted to help all the sick kids in the world.“

Haylen is an inspiring young child who sets an example of selflessness, hard work, a can-do attitude, discipline, resourcefulness, volunteerism, and community involvement for young people in Canada. Without any prodding from his parents, after Haylen donated part of his birthday money to Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta, he asked his family if he could build an ice cream stand to sell ice cream and raise money for the House. His parents helped him build the stand and he quickly raised $200. Now, Haylen sets fundraising goals for himself with the help of community businesses who allow him to sell ice cream to their customers.
