Meet our Outstanding Canadians: Jean-Yves Phaneuf



Jean is a retired Surete de Quebec officer after serving almost 30 years across the Province. After his retirement he was a student supervisor for 12 years at two local schools in Granby and has always been involved in the community. Phaneuf has been supporting youth soccer in the region for over 40 years and is the Founder of a local international soccer tournament and a Foundation which supports youth to play soccer.

Jean has been recognized for his efforts in the community in the following ways:

  • Granby named a park in his honour placed a memorial plaque recognizing his volunteerism
  • National Dollard Morin Volunteer Award in 1999 and 2016 for his volunteerism in sports
  • 2000 Quebec Government’s Volunteer of the Year
  • 2002 Jubilee Medal of her Majesty the Queen
  • 2007 National Assembly Medal
  • 2013 Diamond Jubilee Medal of Queen Elizabeth II

Jean is also currently a nominee for The Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers which recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields. The Medal is an official Canadian honour which is replacing the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award.
