Meet our Outstanding Canadians: Rob Ross

Rob has been volunteering as a Big Brother mentor for the last 41 years with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley, BC. In this time, he's had 12 Little Brothers and is currently matched with Yunjae, his Little Brother of five years, who is about to graduate out of their match as he is now 18. Rob ensures that every Little Brother is given his devoted time and attention. Rob's first little brother, Jerry, is now 52 and a grandfather. Through his mentorship, he has organized golf games as well as camping and fishing trips. He is committed to being with his littles even through tough times, such as sitting in a court room to show his support when a Little has run into minor trouble.

When his Little Brothers have reached their adulthood, Rob tries to remain in contact with them to ensure they have support. Rob has played an integral part in the lives of his Little’s to the point where he has been invited and attended four of their weddings. During his time as a Big Brother, Rob spent time as a director of the local, Provincial and National Big Brother Big Sister Boards.  Rob was a teacher and eventually a principal with the Langley School District, and was able to use his experience as a mentor from the agency with youth at the schools where he worked.

Rob has recently been honoured with a few awards for his outstanding service to youth within the community, including the Governor Generals Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers and the Award of Distinction from the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Community Safety & Crime Prevention division.
