Meet our Outstanding Canadians: Tyler Barnes

Over the years Tyler, also known as Jinx TK, has earned a well-deserved amount of respect from Nanaimo’s hip hop community not only for his talent as a musician, but also as an event planner and promoter. For the last three years, Tyler has taken it on himself to organize an event known as "Hip Hops Toys For Tots,” a Christmas fundraiser concert that showcases talented local hip hop artists.

In order to gain admission through the doors of the event, each person is required to donate at least one children’s Christmas gift or cash. All proceeds from the event are used to purchase additional toys or grocery gift cards for less fortunate families during the holiday season. In 2016, Hip Hop Toys for Tots supplied gifts to 30 children along with gift cards for the family.

Tyler is seen as an admirable, kind hearted man in the community and an amazing role model and father. Tyler didn't have it easy growing up and knows how important it is for every child to feel loved and special on the biggest and most exciting holiday of the year.
