Volunteer Spotlight

Bisola Alabi New

Bisola Alabi

Shaw TV Volunteer Host - Nanaimo / Oceanside

The multi-talented Bisola Alabi first volunteered with Shaw TV in 2001 and honed her skills as a host, camera operator, and producer (for her “Talent Shop” mini-series). After a break to start a family and study for her Master’s Degree in Communications, Bisola returned to volunteering with Shaw TV Nanaimo in 2014 and has primarily taken on the role of hosting—whether in the studio for The Show or in double-duty as host & community access producer for “Teachers: Above and Beyond.” The show is inspired by Bisola’s fond memories of the teachers in her life and so wanted to recognize local impactful teachers who go that extra mile for their students. "Teachers: Above and Beyond" is not her only success; Bisola, who is married with children, credits her family for keeping her on her toes while always jumping from one activity to another.
Sinan Bazna

Sinan Bazna

Shaw TV Volunteer Nanaimo / Oceanside

Sinan moved to Nanaimo in 2008 from his home country of Turkey. He was looking for more opportunities in education and certainly had his choice of careers when he started at Vancouver Island University.  Eventually, Sinan found his niche through the Digital Media Studies course which led him to start volunteering at Shaw TV Nanaimo. Through his studies and participating in several community television productions, Sinan is honing his skills through camera operation on several studio shows and by hosting on "The Community Producers" (which he says is a miracle because of his shyness). Since 2015 he’s learned a variety of different roles with Shaw TV and says what he enjoys most is creating stories from beginning to end. After he receives his Associate’s Degree, Sinan is going to keep an open mind going forward as he sees several options when it comes to a career but ultimately, he will stay in the field of digital media – be it with community programming or something bigger!
Matt Carter

Matt Carter

Shaw TV Volunteer Host - Nanaimo / Oceanside

Matt was born in Kamloops, B.C., raised in Parksville, and hopes to perfect the art of the pun in Nanaimo. He escaped from Vancouver Island University with a Bachelor of Arts (Major in Creative Writing, Minor in Media Studies) in 2006, after buying a baritone saxophone and spending four years in a two-year jazz program. Matt's first association with Shaw TV was not as a subject on “Crime Stoppers,” as commonly believed, but as the theme song composer for “The Locker Room,” a popular sports feature. Eventually, Matt became a host of the show in addition to “Sound Check,” “The Show,” and special projects involving bathtubs and Viking helmets. Matt also co-hosts a funk, reggae, and hiphop radio show on CHLY 101.7, performs with four bands, and announces for the VIU Mariners varsity sports teams.
Dax

Dax Cushman

Shaw TV Volunteer - Nanaimo / Oceanside

Growing up watching TV, enjoying movies, and playing video games, Dax Cushman decided he wanted to get into the film and television world. He received some training through NUTV in Calgary a few years ago and when he saw the opportunity through Shaw TV, to refresh his skills, he joined our volunteer team in March of 2011 and has been very involved ever since. He has been primarily creating and running graphics for a studio production that we do every two weeks. It’s a variety show with many interviews, demos and musical performances. In the last few months, he took on doing the research for our Get Up and Go Community Calendar items and then editing the spots, doing a great job all the way. He also does graphics for "The Show" and "Head On". So he’s here at least two days a week helping our team. Don’t let his quiet demeanor fool you though. He has his moments when his great sense of humour comes out through jokes or one liners that make you laugh. He enjoys his time here and ultimately, Dax would like to try his hand at directing and perhaps one day he will. He’s been a great addition to the Shaw TV Nanaimo team.
Liz Heinz

Elizabeth Heinz

Shaw TV Volunteer Host - Nanaimo / Oceanside

Elizabeth Heinz started volunteering with Shaw TV in 2000. She hosted various studio programs from “Plugged In” to “Hourtown”, a live phone in program where anything went. Unfortunately, after a couple of years she decided to take a hiatus that lasted until now! She’s once again part of our Shaw TV volunteer team and eager to host!

With 35 years of experience working in public relations and road safety, as well as in the health care field, Liz has insight into issues affecting our community. Liz also shares hosting duties with Brian Anderson, and Paul Winn on the new weekly studio production of Coastal Connections. Her quick wit, humour and friendly demeanor are an asset for putting guests at ease. A lifelong traveler, she’s always looking for the next adventure whether it’s discovering her inner artist or aerial yoga. She’s curious about this social experiment called life and feels that volunteering for Shaw TV is a great way to profile a broad spectrum of topics and issues to engage, inform and inspire.

Howie Hennessey has been a Vancouver Islander his whole life, having lived in Port Alberni and Victoria before settling in Nanaimo. He joined Shaw TV as a volunteer in the late 90s and quickly became an integral part of production crews—from studio phone-ins to mobile shoots—and often sharing his knowledge with new volunteers along the way. Now a long-time studio camera operator, he has made an indelible mark on the programming department and is excited to continue his volunteer efforts with Shaw TV. “The sky is the limit on the different subjects and all the new people you meet; that is why I stay involved.”
Ronan Lannuzel

Ronan Lannuzel

Shaw TV Volunteer - Nanaimo / Oceanside

Ronan Lannuzel has been volunteering with Shaw TV Nanaimo since 2014. He brought his own camera skills to the team, as he has created many videos of his own before joining the volunteer program. Ronan has been an integral part of the team doing camera work and has the drive to broaden his experience by participating in a variety of access productions for Shaw TV.  He is currently working with volunteer host Bisola Alabi on Teachers: Above and Beyond, has created several volunteer profiles for The Show on Shaw TV, and is always ready to help out on mobile productions. Ronan enjoys working with a dedicated team to bring positive and uplifting content to the community. "Volunteering is about giving, and with what we do at Shaw TV, I give with a purpose", says Ronan. "It’s a very caring and respectful environment, which makes you want to give your best”.
Kerilie McDowall

Kerilie McDowall

Shaw TV Volunteer - Nanaimo / Oceanside

In the 90’s Kerilie was a jazz guitarist. She knew performing was what she wanted to do, so started looking for a new vocation.  Along came her stint with jazz radio mainly with CHLY 101.7 FM, Nanaimo's campus-community radio station, for 17 years.  With time on her hands, she ended up connecting with Shaw TV Nanaimo in 2016 and started exploring another media through television production. Kerilie has tried many different roles, from studio camera operation to floor directing, also assisting with entering event notices for the on air community message board. Her most notable contribution has been through hosting. Kerilie initially started out with interview segments on "The Show", and is now also one of the regular hosts for "The Community Producers" production that features a variety of content from local access producers. As a volunteer Kerilie enjoys the opportunity that Shaw TV provides to feed her desire to perform, and as such plans to continue growing her skills well into the future!

Jessie Zhang

Jessie Zhang

Shaw TV Volunteer - Nanaimo / Oceanside

Jessie Zhang has a passion for digital storytelling and as such has a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing through Vancouver Island University. She started volunteering with Shaw TV Nanaimo in May 2016 after her first Digital Media class. She is grateful that Shaw TV not only tells stories that happen locally but also helps volunteers to develop their skills in television production.

By taking part in production opportunities Shaw TV provides, Jessie has learned many different roles. She has been involved in "The Show" and "The Inspirational 30". The most valuable lesson she has learned was gaining insight into the TV production process. Jessie has also learned video editing, taking creative camera shots, and hosting skills through staff lead workshops. This hands-on experience has supported her book learning.

As a people person, Jessie loves community. She thinks there are many stories in ordinary life waiting to be told. In the future, Jessie is working towards being an exceptional digital storyteller.
